Garden garlic hung to dry

This is our garlic.  It’s hanging to dry now in our garden shed.  I love the fact that typically in a year we don’t ever have to buy garlic.  We plant it every year (from the previous year’s goodness), eat the garlic scapes, harvest it, and use it all year.  It’s one of the many things I love about our plot of land and the green thumb of my husband (for he started it– long before I was around.)

Maybe some day I’ll do a post just about the life of garlic.  Because I don’t know about you, but before I met my husband, garlic was just a key ingredient that came from the grocery store– I had no idea how to plant it, what it looked like growing, how you could eat more than just one part, and how gorgeous garlic scapes (the other edible part) actually were, or how to harvest it.  Here is a pic of garlic scapes on the grill– but sadly they are also with the peas, so you can’t see the lusciousness of their shape there.  They are the lovely curly queue shaped things.  I have a picture of the middle stage (down below) and the end, hanging here.  And here’s another perspective of said grilling of garden scapes in my post about “Naked Grilling.”

Anyway, here is this year’s crop– with a few onions in there too.

Enjoy!

This is a picture of the middle of the growing stage.  They haven’t yet formed their curly queue scapes yet, but are half-way there.
